AAA TourBooks include a listing of points of interest around the state that offer a Great Experience for Members: exceptional places for your list of “things to do.” GEMs are chosen solely on merit—an attraction or destination can't apply for GEM status.
Colorado has 28 GEMs and a different one will be featured in each issue.
Opened in 1878, Central City Opera House is the oldest theater in the Rocky Mountain region still in operation. Located in the beautifully preserved National Historic District of this former gold-rush town, the opera house has won awards for the excellence of its restoration.
The opera house presents acclaimed traditional operas throughout the summer, along with less familiar works. Just as in previous centuries, this cultural treasure in an unlikely location attracts internationally renowned performers, and audiences from near and far. The 2007 program will feature Verdi's La Traviata, Massenet's Cendrillon, Menotti's The Saint of Bleeker Street, and the world premier of a new Chinese opera, Poet Li Bai by Guo Wenjing. Operas are performed in the original language with English subtitles.
Guided tours of the building are offered on weekends during September and October.
