Moms all across the country are remembered each year on the second Sunday of May with gifts of flowers, cards and chocolates. Have you ever wondered why this day was chosen to honor mothers?

“Mothering Sunday” has been a tradition in England since the 1600s. In the USA, Mother's Day was first proposed in 1908 by Anna Jarvis, who wished to memorialize the life work of her mother, a West Virginia homemaker who continually tried to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community.

In 1914, Anna's hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill officially recognizing Mother's Day. Carnations — the favorite flower of Anna's mother—are traditionally held to represent maternal love.
