Thinking about taking your first cruise? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.
Do cruise lines welcome families with kids?
Most cruise lines provide plenty of age-appropriate, supervised activities for kids. Youth counselors will help keep them busy and entertained with swimming, sports, games, movies and adventures.
Is motion sickness a problem?
Stabilizers on modern ships, availability of advance weather information and development of effective preventative medications have, for the most part, eliminated the incidence of motion sickness.
If you are still concerned, book a cabin in the center part of the ship where the motion is least noticeable.
Can we stay in touch with the outside world?
Many staterooms are equipped with televisions and have satellite or cellular telephones. While at sea, you can also call someone on shore through the ship's radio officer. Most ships have fax capabilities, and many have computer cafes and/or business centers with internet and email access.
Are all ships fairly similar?
Not at all. Cruise ships range from intimate and yacht-like to vessels stretching longer than three football fields. You can sail with fewer than 100 fellow guests or with more than 2,600. Atmospheres range from casual to formal.
What should I pack?
Pack like you would for any resort vacation. Cruise wear is casual by day, whether you're on the ship or ashore. In the evening, ships vary as to dress code. While many cruise passengers enjoy formal nights, there are often alternative options for those who prefer more casual dining.
Do I need a passport?
Currently, all persons traveling by air between the USA, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Bermuda are required to present a valid passport. As early as Jan. 1, 2008, that requirement may also apply to those traveling by land or sea between the USA and those same destinations.
